Addiction Counseling
“First you take a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you”
– F. Scott Fitzgerald
- Are drugs and alcohol getting in the way of your significant relationships?
- Do you find that you think about drinking or drugging when you are at work?
- Are you unable to stop drinking or using drugs even if you want to?
- Have you ever lied about the amount you drink or use drugs?
- Do these questions apply to your Husband or Wife or significant other?
- Did you grow up in a family with alcoholic or addicted parents?
- Are you in 12 step recovery a long time and having problems you don’t talk about at meetings?
Alcoholism and Drug Addiction are extremely difficult and complicated diseases to treat. They are family diseases that affect far more people than just the ones suffering with the substance misuse. Many therapists claim to treat addiction and alcoholism but lack the appropriate experience and training to do it effectively.
I have treated adults, families, couples, and adolescents. I have treated people in individual and group settings. I have treated people at in-patient, partial hospital, and outpatient settings. I have treated people with addiction and codependency issues for almost twenty five years. Here is what I have learned in that time:
- Alcoholics and Addicts ALWAYS use for a reason
- Alcohol and drugs help you until they start to kill you
- There are always seemingly rational reasons to use
- I won’t tell you to stop using if you don’t want to
- Let’s see how substances help, and find other ways to get the same results
- Non-addicted family members are often as sick as the addicted family member
- Non-addicted family members are harder to help since “they aren’t alcoholic”
- I do my best to listen without prejudice. I take a Holistic approach. There are many different ways to change your relationship to drugs and alcohol. If you are interested in continuing to drink or use, regardless of the consequences, we do that in therapy, so we can have a neutral third party report what happens.
